Lahido in Mandinka means being committed, or an agreement arrived at with society or person(s); whereas kontibo implies accountability and trustworthiness. In ancient times, it was meant to be one relied upon or a “gentleman’s agreed undertaking” after a firm handshake. The nearest to it today connote signing a lease to gain access to a flat or guarantee of some loan and service. It is taboo to break this Lahido or kontibo term. Lahido kept marriages and social contracts intact. Society scorns those found wanting. Everyone is subject to lahido and kontibo reference. African leaders and politicians fail this ritual; as they promise all that is between heaven and earth, knowing that they could not ever deliver such fantasy to their audiences. Electoral theoretic vote seekers promise audiences that if elected their ghetto villages will be turned into paradises and including opulence these never dreamt getting in life. I write to raise funds for building Manding Medical Centre’s hospital, Njawara, The Gambia.
